Born and raised near Toronto, Canada, Alex spent his childhood playing sports and music, camping, fishing and working for his father who ran several manufacturing plants for a multi-national automobile parts supplier.
In high school Alex excelled in track & field (100, 200 and 400 m sprints) and archery, played in classical and jazz bands (trumpet) and sang tenor in the school’s first barbershop quartet.
He attended University of Waterloo where he graduated with an honors degree in Mechanical Engineering completing additional coursework in economics and information management science. During his time at U of W - a school with an internationally renowned cooperative education program – he secured job placements with Magna International, Atlantis Aerospace, Eaton-Yale and Husky Injection Molding. Upon completing college he worked full-time for Husky in Luxembourg where he designed and implemented software to integrate the company’s financial reporting units. While in Europe Alex traveled extensively taking frequent trips to Austria and Malta, his parents’ birth countries.
He returned to North America in 2001 and settled in Santa Rosa, California where he was promoted to Engineering Project Manager at Agilent Technologies, a 40,000 employee spin-off of Hewlett-Packard Corporation. After 5 years with Agilent he left to pursue a passion for helping people in more tangible and personal ways by joining a wealth management firm in San Rafael, CA. There Alex served clients for 11 years - first as the company’s Portfolio Specialist. Then as Associate Adviser, Senior Adviser and finally as a Principal and a co-owner of the 30-person firm.
As a long-standing member of the investment board, Alex exercised investment decision making authority over >$1-billion in managed client assets while earning the trust and respect of 75 successful families for whom he provided financial planning and wealth management services. Along the way he enrolled in post-graduate programs earning the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Private Wealth Advisor® designations. These are, respectively, considered the industry gold standards for financial planning, institutional investment management and advising high net worth, multi-generational families.
Alex and his spouse, Scholotte - a Berkeley native and UCLA alumna - raise their three young children in Novato, CA. Alex serves on the board of the local school's Parent Teacher Association, is a Mentor-Me mentor and coaches the Novato Nighthawks lacrosse team. Scholotte volunteers extensively in the classroom and is a tireless advocate for closing the education gap among the school’s demographically diverse student body.
In 2018 Alex founded Wealthspan. He enjoys serving clients by helping them achieve their most salient life goals and strives to have a material and positive impact by bringing planning, skill and sensitivity to clients, neighbors and friends - all of whom he considers family.
